O Alma de Viajante é the oldest website travel guide and is written in Portuguese from Portugal. It was born in the distant year of 2001, initially housed in the address www.fmgomes.com (de Filipe Morato Gomes) but already under the brand Alma de Viajante.
On this page, I tell you a little more about the beautiful History of Alma de Viajante. The text is long, but it will be a way for you to know me a little better. Come on.
#1 How it all began
I started traveling with my parents. The destinations were always very close and the budget very reduced. But we were going. And it was good.
I remember the wild camping holidays in the Serra do Soajo, weeks of discovery in which, with the help of an uncle scout, we created "luxurious" camps using branches and leaves, with the right table and benches for meals, kitchen countertops and lava and even an oven covered with cow dung. And the cold waters of the brooks did not cool our spirits.
I remember the interminable days of VW Carocha from Vila Nova de Famalicão to Vila Real de Santo António, where we enjoyed the beaches of the Algarve beaches, picked up conquilhas and lingueirão for lunch and turned into fierce Indians with Nívea cream.
And then, as a teenager, there were vacations in Zambujeira do Mar, when the village was just that, a village, in the days when access to the beach of Alteirinhos was made by a dangerous escarpment, the Café Fresco had not yet been swept away by the waters and one did not know what a summer festival was.
It was a "travel" to the measure of the time, almost always inside doors, taking a trip through Spain and south of France, also of tent on the back, from where I recall in memory names like Sète or Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer and a fabulous camping in Barcelona.
For years, I also remember hearing stories from my grandfather's mouth, episodes from the Trans-Siberian, the Mongolian steppes, the Brazilian Amazon, and from the four corners of the world.
I grew up. And the desire grew in me.
I started to do more and more trips. To write and photograph, to try to publish these stories and to give usefulness to the "way" they said they had to write [nowadays I give workshops Travel Writing Tools].
I wanted to travel more and more. Very. For a long time. Already employed and reasonably well paid, I repeated countless times that "any day" I said goodbye and went "to take a trip around the world".
At the time, there was no one to write about such a trip in Portugal, but he did not have the courage to take that step. I never had the courage.
#2 The first Alma de Viajante
While this was not happening, in my spare time I used my professional skills in multimedia to build a website what did i call Alma de Viajante.
I took my pictures, in some texts published in magazines (the first article I published in a travel magazine was about Mauritius with the title Mauritius, watercolor in the Indian Ocean), I did the design (very basic), I programmed, I did everything. It was not even talked about Blogs when was born Alma de Viajante; was a website, as was said at the time.
It gave me great pleasure to deal with website baby, but still did not make such a great trip. Until one day the my life changed.
#3 The day I was fired
It was early afternoon of a normal work day, sometime in February of 2003. There were difficult times, several colleagues had already been fired because of the bursting of the multimedia "bubble" (in my "other life", I created software educational multimedia and amused myself immensely to play with sound, video, image, copywriting, programming ... finally, with the wonderful world of communication).
A clerk called me to his office. I sat down. He accused me of committing a serious irregularity and so the company would institute disciplinary proceedings with a view to my dismissal.
A few days later, and with the "inquiries process" going on, they informed me that a sort of Ryan Bingham (George movie Up in the Air) wanted to talk to me. He greeted me, went straight to the point, introduced me to accounts that were almost half empty, and left.
Unwilling to go to court and see the matter dragged, I accepted the proposal. And he said, "It is now!" AND the day that could be of sadness and depression has become one of the most important of my life.
I had run out of a job, and I regarded it as a blessing.
I started to save as much money as possible, to do small work to raise funds, to to plan, to plan, to plan. And so I walked a year and peak, from savings to savings, from chore to chore, from map to map until the final farewells.
#4 The first round the world (2004-05)
In July of 2004, I left for my first around the world, a journey that would completely change me. Irreversibly.
These were most probably the most extraordinary 14 months of my life; or at least those who had the most impact on what I am today. Upon returning from the trip, I knew that being fired was one of the best things that had ever happened to me.
I started dedicating 14, 15, 16 or more hours a day to Alma de Viajante. I invited other travelers to share their website, avoiding its disappearance in the rubbish bin (at the time, no travel magazine was present on-line).
Gradually, I transformed the Alma de Viajante in a space on travel journalism, and which includes hundreds of travel reports from well-known journalists and experienced travelers. O website became a kind of reference in the Portuguese language and, in the meantime, my text served as the basis for a play.
I continued to travel more and more, to write and publish chronicles and reports in magazines in Portugal and in Brazil, to grow the Alma de Viajante. Any excuse was good to leave. From Mexico to Nicaragua, from Sao Tome and Principe to Botswana, from Egypt to Iran, from Hungary to Turkey, I traveled, traveled, traveled.
#5 Dedicating me to 100% for travel and writing
With my accumulated experience, I began to teach workshops de Travel Writing, where I share the art of turning a journey into appealing written records, either to arouse the interest of an editor or to those who want to have or improve their blog of travel.
I was part of the agency's fabulous travel leader team. Nomad. I gave several lectures. I have encouraged people to be happier.
And Alma de Viajante was growing and changing. For years, in addition to reporting, I travel and tourism news; very especially flight promotions help people save money. It was also undergoing some graphic and technological changes.
Until I became a father, the daughter grew up and I decided to show that it is also possible traveling with kids of the planet's highways.
Was the second round the world, this time in family, was the year of 2012. The trip lasted 10 months, during which time I wrote weekly chronicles for the magazine Fugas - but I did not write anything for the Alma de Viajante.
On my return, I felt that the trip was a missed opportunity in the production of travel stories. He felt that he needed to write in a different way than in magazines. It was the click that I needed to create something new. And so a blog of personal travel.
#6 O blog The Filipe Morato Gomes
At the beginning of 2013, and with Alma de Viajante too formal and technologically outdated, it seemed to me to make sense to create a blog of separate personal travel where you could write more intimately. That's when I invented the signature "Travel. Share. To inspire."Which still guides my work today.
At 14 in January of 2013, I wrote the following:
Today, practically 10 years ago on the happy day of my dismissal, I needed a space where I could write in a more personal way, sharing with you all impressions about life on the road, reflections and little secrets of the travel world - that coffee discovered by chance, an extraordinary person, a street, a taste or disappointment, a surprising destination, not forgetting that practical tip that only those who walk on the ground have a way of knowing. Everything in a more intimate, close and personal register.
With all this, maybe it helps others to have the courage I did not have to change my life. I needed the push of unemployment - now maybe it's my turn to push you to meet your dreams.
So, back to origins - this www.fmgomes.com was the original address of the blog from the first round the world - to write about the experiences of the professional nomad in which I have become. It will be, finally, the record of a life in movement.
This is how this blog, my new digital home. For travel, share, inspire.
With the new space, I began to have immense pleasure in writing posts on blog The Filipe Morato Gomes, especially for inspire others to travel.
At the time it seemed like a winning bet, to the point where the new blog to win the Best Professional Travel Blog award at BTL, at the beginning of 2015, defeating an entire newsroom blog of Fugas was another of the nominees).
O Alma de Viajante, for its part, was technologically outdated. During the year of 2015, I decided it had to be completely overhauled. And so I did. It was a kind of extreme makeover total. Technologically, he started using Wordpress, the best content manager on the planet for such projects (he should have done this many years before). Visually it has been modernized, simplified, adopted a more chub - A design current.
But the truth is that they had spent two years investing more blog staff (who was giving me a lot of pleasure), neglecting the Alma de Viajante. Worse: having two projects, every time he traveled he found it difficult to decide how to divide experiences into two spaces, such that sometimes he did not write to any of them.
That is, I tried to divide my attention between the two projects, but I could not do it well.
That was when I felt I was on the wrong track and that I needed to disperse my energies less. Join efforts. Focus on me.
#7 O Alma de Viajante again as blog of travel
It was the month of May of 2016 when I finally made the decision: integrate the blog staff at Alma de Viajante, and give it the most personal and intimate stamp, making it a true blog of travel. At the time, I wrote:
As of today [18 May 2016], the blog The Filipe Morato Gomes ceases to exist independently. The good news is that it does not end, it will only be Alma de Viajante.
The reason is simple: I can not keep both Blogs at the same time as the quality that I demand of myself and with an acceptable rate of publication. Therefore, I made the decision to transfer to the Alma de Viajante the existing texts and to focus there the publication of new posts.
Thus, with this change, I began to give a more personal Alma de Viajante, to return the blog of travel.
And that allows me to be closer to the traveler readers, to interact more, to work again with passion.
At this point, I can already say that was an excellent decision. O Alma de Viajante is stronger, the community has grown rapidly, the organization improved and I am finally focused on 100% in this
my our blog of travel.
More recently, I made the drastic decision to completely eliminate banners advertising Alma de Viajante. The focus is all on content. On the trip. In the readers.
I expect a lot of good for the Alma de Viajante.
Thanks for taking part in this trip.!
