If you are reading this text, you are very likely to want to start one blog of travel. Great! Maybe I'm thinking how you can travel more; how to share these trips in an interesting way; who might even realize the dream of living a day of travel - and create a blog seems a good idea to achieve these goals. I agree: it's a great idea! But it is not easy.
I do not usually write about what lies behind blog - A Alma de Viajante is a travel space, not about blogging. But more and more people have asked me what to do to start a blog of travel, and I wanted to have how to explain the process. In response, I have prepared this practical guide.
Index: How to get one blog of travel
After 15 years of experience as blogger of travel, I hope with this guide to help all travelers and lovers of writing and photography to enter this wonderful world of the blogosphere.
The guide is a bit long (or full, if you prefer) and is divided into seven sections. Each addresses a specific aspect of creating a blog - of hosting graphic aspect, beginning with a deep understanding of what it is to be a blogger. That's all you need to know to get started. blog of travel. Let's do it.
1. Understand the work of a blogger of travel
For many years, when they asked me what I did I had a hard time answering. No one would understand if I said it was blogger of travel, and in fact, I did not assume myself as such. It said that everything I did professionally was "linked to travel and writing"; and then explained that he had a website travel leader, who was the leader of the workshops of writing. It was true, but she needed to stop being ashamed to use the word blogger.
Not now. I say I am blogger of travel.
To assume as blogger, whether amateur or professional, is the first step for people to respect the work of blogger. To take him seriously. So you understand that it really works hard. That the texts are not written by magic; nor the edited photos. That's not all pink, tropical beaches and bikini girls with cocktails in the hands.
Yes, manage one blog of travel implies working many more hours than the overwhelming majority of people with a job said "normal". And without ever knowing what the return of this work will be.
Why, then, do I and a few others make life travels? Because we are happy. Score. It gives work, but I did not change my lifestyle for any other.
Things You Should Know Before Becoming a Digital Nomad
You know that you have all my support to create a blog of travel. The purpose of this "How to get a blog of travel "is that same: help you. But before you start, it's important to be aware of some things about the life of blogger / blogger.
(get ready to read things you will not like)
It will not be easy
Most people who try to make a blog with the purpose of making money gives up in less than a year. Yes, it is very likely to take a long time to start making money with blog. It will have to be original, to distinguish itself. You'll have to be persistent and patient. It will not be easy!
Are you working day and night?
To manage the blog will work harder than any other job you have ever had. The good news is that you can do it anywhere in the world, in any type of environment (as long as you have access to the Internet): whether in the comfort of your home or in a bungalow in front of the sea on a beach in the Philippines.
Your office becomes a laptop - and that's good. But the weekends and the free time are over, because you'll want to take every minute to treat your blog.
Be blogger do not just write
You may not believe it, but only a small part of the blogger is passed to write. It will take a lot of time to respond to readers' comments; to reply to messages from e-mail to refuse "partnerships"; to feed social networks; to deal with technical aspects of blog; to install plugins; to think about SEO (Search Engine Optimization); to change the appearance of the blog; to think, to experiment, to err, to innovate ... and to plan the next trip.
In the middle, you will also write, edit photographs and publish the contents. But do not think that to be a blogger travel just write.
You have to invest to succeed
Manage one blog it's like running any other business: it's easier to succeed if you carefully invest your money. These are little things that can make all the difference.
Clearly most of the issues I board can be resolved for free. Even with regard to specific technical aspects such as plugins for WordPress, there are free versions that are sufficient. But many others do not. If you are fully committed to the goal of succeeding in the world of Blogs of travel, sooner or later you will need to invest in tools that make it better. For example:
- Will look for hosting specialized SiteGround or Studio Press Sites, which guarantees speed, security and a professional support service to help you solve problems;
- Will choose a theme premium recognized enterprises, such as Studio Press themes or Eleghant Themes;
- Go buy the version. premium of some plugins fundamental to the success of the blog;
- And it will create a mailing list managed by the professional tools of AWeber, from Mailchimpof the Portuguese and go or, preferably, of the ConvertKit.
Do not worry if, for now, you do not quite understand what I'm talking about. I will explain everything, step by step, below (in the case of mailing list, I will address the matter in a text ConvertKit is the best tool for managing email marketing his blog. But get the idea that getting a blog travel involves investing some money.
The holidays (as you know them) are over
You will continue to have vacations, of course, but whenever you travel you will want to enjoy to make some posts. And this is not bad, on the contrary. But keep in mind that, once you start a blog you want to write about your travels (this is the essence of a blog).
In other words, travel is no longer just holidays and becomes a raw material for producing texts. Which means work. Do not be scared ... but be aware of it.
2. Set the type of blog
At the beginning, and even before post it is not easy to define what will be the blog. But the sooner you have the exact notion of what you want to do, the easier it is to create an audience that matches what you write.
Choose a niche that will love you
For me, at this moment, with the blogosphere flooded with Blogs of travel - even in Portuguese - the best advice I can give is: choose a niche. Do not just create one more blog about your travels. Be creative. And become a reference in that niche.
For example, if you love five-star hotels, luxury cruises and Michelin-star restaurants, specialize in the so-called luxury travel. Do not mix these luxurious experiences with, for example, a backpacking trip. Do not think it would be confusing for readers to have a post about traveling alone and the hitchhiking in Italy followed by another on a luxurious honeymoon, two at best resort from Bora Bora? Would you be writing for what audience?
Write about budget travel or about luxury travel, but not both simultaneously. Write to young people looking for inspiration for a gap year or for mature travelers, with other interests and other travel style. Write about traveling with children or about the experiences of a young woman backpacker to travel alone. create a blog on cycling trips, but do not give in to the temptation to report a cruise he did in the meantime. Do I understand?
That is, choose a niche and remain as faithful as possible to it. Ideally, one should be passionate about the subject and imagine that in a few years' time it will remain comfortable on that skin. Do you love cycling? Great, write about it. In short, choose a travel style, a location or a specific theme ... and make the choice.
It is natural that at the beginning it is difficult to define your niche, your style, what you really love. But one thing is certain: sooner or later, you will have to do it. And the sooner you do, the better.
An example of a niche that I think blog of Kash Bhattacharya. O blog is called Budget Traveler, but it is not a normal blog to help backpackers travel with little money. Instead, Kash specializes in "cheap travel with style". It created, among other things, a guide on the best hostels Europe, a seemingly contradictory concept that fits perfectly into the blog. And so it differed from the rest.
City blog: an excellent idea for those who travel little
You probably have the assurance that to have a blog travel has to travel a lot. But this is not always true (there it is, it depends on your niche).
Some of the most successful Blogs travel in Portuguese do not report actual travel. They fall into the category of city blogs and speak almost exclusively of a specific destination. As a rule, it is Brazilians living in Europe who have created Blogs dedicated exclusively to his adopted city.
If, for personal, family, or professional reasons, you can not travel much, create a city blog is an excellent option. a blog dedicated to Setúbal, Faro or Madeira; or, in the broadest sense, Portugal, Spain, the country where he lives. Focus rather than disperse.
But it is important that you decide this as soon as possible; if you do it from the beginning, it will help you focus on the main goal of blog, and not to disperse energies. I indicate some city blogs in Portuguese to better understand what kind of projects I am referring to.
- Ducs Amsterdam, or city blog by Daniel Duclos with many tips on Amsterdam, dedicated to Brazilian travelers;
- Connection Paris, probably the city blog in Portuguese more financially successful;
- CBN PassportTo blog about Barcelona whose name will inspire the code of the local airport;
- Routes CapixabasTo blog of which I like very much about the Brazilian State of Espírito Santo, to show that the blog it can be about a region and not just a city;
- CultTo blog which aims to promote the culture and tourism of Portugal in Brazil, run by two Brazilians living in Lisbon. An example of a blog focused on a country (in this case, Portugal) and written for a specific audience (Brazilian tourists).
In short, write about a city, a country or whatever you want, but try to set the focus of your blog. And work to become the national / Portuguese / world reference in this niche. It's better to be the best. blog in Portuguese on the Azores than just one among thousands of Blogs of generic travel. Keep this in mind when starting a blog of travel.
Knowing what kind of blog want to do, it's time to choose a good name.
3. Choose a name (unique and memorable)
Choose the name of the blog is absolutely fundamental. In a world increasingly saturated with sites e Blogs it is important that your company is distinguished from the crowd. For this you have to be creative.
Gone are the time when it was paramount to have the keywords in the name and address, because of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) - type www.viajenaviagem.com, of the great Ricardo Freire. Now, increasingly, the important thing is to be a creative and memorable name. In my opinion, a good name should have three key characteristics:
- Be short and simple;
- Be original and memorable;
- Be durable (not "trapped").
Short and simple name
A name like "Journey of a Year and a Half of Joan of the World" is obviously a bad name - being able to break all the basic rules for the creation of the name of the blog. "I'm going there and I'll be back before it gets dark" has the advantage of being original, but it's still very bad. Both have in common the fact that they are huge names. Simplify! Choose a short name.
Original and memorable name
What do you think of "Backpacker in the World" or "The Travels of Augustus"? They seem to me trivial and not very memorable. The opposite of what is needed nowadays: creative names.
Eg Chicken or Pasta is a name that, in the literal sense, has nothing to do with travel; but that everyone who travels immediately associates with the food of an airplane. To me, he puts a smile on my face. I find a brilliant example of a distinctive name for a blog in English. More examples? Here are others Blogs successful and easily identifiable: Bacon is Magic, The Planet D, The Blond Abroad, Migrationology, Roads & Kingdons. Or, in another log (they are travel guides, not Blogs, but serve as examples of names that remain in memory), the Balkanology and Caravanistan.
That is, choose a name that has to do with you and the niche of your blog, but avoid the use of words already used too much, like nomad, traveler, vagabond, backpacker, wanderlust and the like. I know one of the most successful Blogs travel calls Nomadic Matt but when Matt Kepnes started his blog, the concept "nomad" was far from saturated. In the background, be creative.
Long lasting name
Imagine Catarina, known as Katy, is going to study or live half a year in Auckland, New Zealand, and decides to create a blog to share the experience. "Katy in Auckland" is a proper name, correct? Wrong. It's what I call a trapped name, which will "trap" it into the future.
The name may even be excellent for those first six months, by easily identifying the object of the blog (Katy's stay in the city of Auckland). But what if, at the end of that time, Katy moves to Tokyo, Japan? Or decide to travel the world? The name no longer makes sense! Most likely, the blog would have to change its name to continue to be a mirror of reality, and Catherine would have to start from scratch the creation of a new "brand".
The same applies if you do, for example, a motorhome trip in South America and decide to give the blog a caravan name for the Americas. And then, when you change the continent or mode of transportation, the name of the blog? Or are you thinking about creating a blog for each trip? It would be a gross mistake.
In short, choose a strong name with a strong identity that reflects your travel style, but do not attach it to a geographical location (except in the case of a blog destination) or at a set time (unless you do not want to blog at the end of this period).
Name change: a real example
I give you a real and recent example. The Cris Marques, a blogger Brazil, which I greatly appreciate, has for many years fed blog called Inside the Backpack. Until the time came when the name no longer reflected the spirit of the blog and did not allow him to write about other things. Here are his words:
"The blog Inside the Mochilão will change your name and I need your inspiration! It is time to close this cycle and start a new phase. The name change comes to expand horizons and take the weight off of being a blog targeting backpacker - which is sometimes a barrier to some projects. You who accompany me know that it is not just a blog of "backpacking"; on the contrary, only 20% of my audience considers themselves backpackers. O blog can embrace many other themes (independent of the segment) such as women, sustainability, culture, spirituality, among others. "
And so, after a brainstorming digital format in which he asked his readers to help him create a new name, he decided to rename Inside the Mochilão as Roots of the World. Of course, it would have been much better if he had never had to change.
That being said, it is clear that changing names and addresses is no drama. It happens. Even because it is impossible to predict which way the blog of long-term travel. Despite some relevant drawbacks (such as loss of ranking in the eyes of Google), everything is solved. Only it can be more painful than you think.
Therefore, if the name of the blog is a weighted choice (and is not chosen by impulse), the less likely it is to deal with the inconvenience of changing its name.
Choose a name short and simple, original and memorable, and thought for the future. In other words, be creative and avoid things like:
- "Backpacker in the world" (it is too generic, has no creativity and says little about his identity, in addition to backpacking);
- "Alone on the globe" (it's a trapped name: if you get a mate or fellow traveler and start traveling for two, will you change the name?);
- "Anita in Qatar" (attaches to a location - unless the purpose is to create a city blog, in which case the idea would be acceptable);
- "Cycling in Asia without a penny in the pocket but a lot of desire to travel" (besides many other inconveniences, it is too big).
Now that you have an idea and a name, let's implement it ...
4. Choose one host (and install WordPress)
If the technology scares you a bit, you're probably thinking that creating a blog is very difficult. It is not. Follow these steps.
Where to stay blog
There is no going back. If you want to create a blog of travel "seriously", sooner or later will have to hire the accommodation to some company. I will try to help you in this task.
There are hundreds of possible hosting companies, but it is important not to choose a company just because the service is very cheap. On the day that you have a serious problem, your blog you are down hours, technical support can not help you answer your questions, or worse, if the servers are not secure and some hacker destroy months or years of work, you will regret this option.
That is, if you want to take your blog to a level of some seriousness, choose companies with a good reputation.
Accommodation: My choices
After several years as a client of a small Portuguese company, I decided to move to SiteGround on the recommendation of a friend in technology. And I could not be more pleased. Highly recommend.
I have yet another suggestion, so that you have alternatives and you can choose the one you like best. If you choose to use the framework Genesis (see section on The graphical aspect of the blog, below), I recommend right away a service specifically designed for WordPress environments called Studio Press Sites. It is a solution that benefits from "zero stress" and that, in addition to hosting, includes 20 themes premium the choice. Now, since I am a faithful user of the Genesis platform, if I were to create a blog likely to opt for full service Studio Press Sites.
In short, with regard to housing blog, choose one of these companies:
- SiteGround (every situation - it's my pick of the moment)
- Studio Press Sites (specific solution for the Genesis platform - which I also use in the Alma de Viajante!)
Throughout this guide, I will use Siteground as an example (for serving everyone, including those who do not opt for Genesis), to demonstrate what you have to do to register. It's the next step to get your blog of travel.
Let's do it.
To get started, choose the StartUp plan. In the first phase, there is no reason to invest more money.
If you have not yet registered your domain, this is the right time to do so. I recommend using a ".com" extension. If you already have a domain, just enter it in the respective box (where I wrote "omeublog" in the image above).
And that's it, just choose the payment method and that's it!
If you are based in Portugal, leave the option Amsterdam server location. If your blog is based on Brazil, probably the Miami option will make more sense. Additionally, I recommend that you have the "HackAlert Monitoring"Activated, as a preventive measure to monitor the blog against malicious attacks. It's what I do in the Alma de Viajante.
One of the biggest mistakes I've ever made in History of Alma de Viajante was not start using WordPress as CMS (Content Management System) right from the start.
First, the Alma de Viajante was manually programmed in html and php. And then, when I website in a true blog travel times by my time first round the world, I chose Movable Type instead of WordPress.
Nowadays, this is a non-subject. WordPress is the platform used by the main bloggers of travel on the planet and is arguably the best for almost all kinds of Blogs .
Installing WordPress is very easy. Depending on the host you choose, can even be done with a simple click. Whether to host or blog na SiteGround, the installation of WordPress is almost automatic. Enough follow the instructions on this page after doing login for the first time in your account.
With the treated hosting and WordPress installed, it is now necessary to choose a theme and later to artillery it with some plugins.
5. The graphical aspect of the blog
In a simplistic way, it is called the design do blog. That is, the graphical aspect of a blog created with WordPress is determined by the theme used, so choosing a good theme is a process that should not be overlooked when starting a blog of travel. He will say a lot about the style he wants to instill in the project (a more sober and institutional style, or more informal and fun ...).
How to choose a theme
To the Blogs of travel, I generally recommend:
- themes in magazine format (themes designed for digital magazines and Blogs);
- ou themes multi purpose (themes designed to cover all types of sites, not specifically designed for Blogs but they have great flexibility and lots of graphical features).
Among the topics in magazine format, I have preference for the modularity of framework genesis, by Studio Press. And the best platform in terms of SEO, but is best used by anyone with some programming knowledge, namely CSS and PHP. It's what I use in the Alma de Viajante, together with the theme Magazine Pro.
Another very interesting option are the themes of Elegant Themes, especially the Extras, by the endless possibilities that allow in graphical terms.
Finally, if you do not want to use the themes of Studio Press or Eleghant Themes (two extraordinary companies, of which I am member for life), I recommend instead Theme Forest - thousands of other WordPress themes are available for great quality and proven success.
In particular, here are some of the popular themes for Blogs of travel:
Magazine Pro is the theme I currently use in Alma de Viajante. Although visually very minimalist, I recommend it with no restrictions. In any case, before deciding to see the others Studio Press themes and choose the one that best fits your idea of blog. For example, for Blogs gastronomic or Foodie Pro it's very good. Studio Press themes are among the most prestigious on the market. + info
Extra is a theme of Eleghant Themes, which I trust 100%. It is graphically very versatile and stylish, being especially bloggers more creative. A good bet for Blogs contemporaries. + info
Espresso is a magazine format theme widely used in Blogs of travel. If I had not been a fan of Studio Press, I would be a serious candidate for this blog. + info
The Avada is the biggest selling theme of all time in Theme Forest, and that says a lot about its potentialities. It is a generalist theme, not specifically designed for Blogs. + info
6. Plugins indispensable
Os plugins are tools that allow you to expand the features of WordPress without the need to know how to program. Among the most frequent uses are the automatic detection of comments spam, the creation of contact forms, the use of caches to increase the speed of the blog, or tools linked to SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
Throughout my life blogger I've tried many hundreds of plugins. Of these, I regularly use about 30, some of which I consider to be fundamental in any blog of travel. Install them as soon as possible.
Akismet is the best and most used method to filter spam in its blog. Required installation (free for Blogs personal). + info
In order to avoid malignant access by Brute Force, it is convenient to install a manual login of WordPress. To do this easily and effectively, I recommend the Plugin Capcha (free). + info
The "weight" of images is one of the main factors for many Blogs too slow. To combat this scourge, there are plugins which minimize the size of images without noticeable quality loss. Highly recommend the WP Smush (free with restrictions). + info
The earlier you pay attention to SEO (Search Engine Optimization) best for your blog. Even if you do not have SEO notions, install the free version of the Plugin. Afterwards, I recommend that you install the Premium version but for now there is a free version with which you can start (for many years I have used the free version). + info
To install a Plugin access the dashboards of your WordPress, click on the "Plugins / Add new" option in the left menu.
7. Write, write, write
I have already written that only a small part of the work of a blogger travel is dedicated to writing. It is true. But that small part is critical to success. The content you produce will be your brand image. For good and evil.
Now that the blog is created, it's time to start produce quality content. In the second part of this series, I begin precisely by addressing the issue of content.
Summary: How to get one blog of travel
