During the last decade I have used the travel insurance World Nomads and I can say that I am a satisfied customer. The only time that I had to start insurance. were professional and efficient. And, not least, they paid what they had to pay after making sure the claim was fair and covered by the policy.
It turns out that travel insurance World Nomads there are some things I wish they were different. Of course, high franchises; then they do not allow multiple trips (which is beneficial for those who make several trips a year); in addition, in recent times they have excluded some countries from the coverages (Ukraine and Iran, for example); the service is not in Portuguese (which is a problem for some of the readers); does not allow insurance for over 65 years (which is a problem for other readers); and finally, they are not cheap insurance.
I have, therefore, been looking for alternative travel insurance to recommend in the Alma de Viajante and discovered two: the First Allied, referenced by a blogger of adventure as a good insurance to travel to problematic destinations, but which I have not yet had opportunity to use; and the IATI Seguros, which I met recently. It is precisely about the IATI Seguros which I write today; because I was really impressed with the toppings and decided to try it out.
Travel insurance for IATI Seguros
I contracted last December an insurance called IATI Bloggers and Travelers Multivation à IATI Seguros. It lasts for one year, and that is why travel insurance will be active until December of 2019. It allows me to make unlimited travel throughout the year, as long as each one lasts no longer than three months. That is, it is very likely to be useful for all the trips I make during the year.
Advantages of insurance IATI
Here are some advantages of travel insurance IATI Seguros.
#1 You can travel to all countries
One of the things I went to check immediately when I IATI was excluded some destinations of coverages. For my surprise, covers all the countries of the world. And that's a huge plus, especially for long trips. In my case, as I am thinking of visiting Ukraine on 2019 and World Nomads excluded the country from its coverage, travel insurance IATI Seguros fill this gap.
#2 Insurance has no deductible
Exception to emergency situations in the World Nomads you need to pay 70 € for each "event". In practice, this franchise makes insurance less interesting for small travel problems.
For example, if you have to go to a doctor for any illness or health problem, it is very likely that the consultation will cost less than this amount, which is why insurance is not worth triggering. Over the last decade, this has happened to me a few times (in which I did not trigger insurance because of the franchise). It was therefore with satisfaction that I discovered that IATA Seguros travel insurance, there are no deductible.
#3 Enables multiple trips for one year (or one trip from 6 to 12 months)
Na World Nomads there is no long-term insurance (one year, for example) that allows you to come and go multiple times. There are long-term insurance, of course, but as soon as the traveler returns to the country of origin the insurance loses its validity.
For me, who travel often for reduced periods of time, multiple travel insurance would be the ideal situation. At IATI Seguros, there is travel insurance for frequent travelers that allows multiple trips (that is, the policy does not end once you return to the country of origin, be it Portugal or Brazil). The policy is called IATI Bloggers and Travelers Multivation, and that's what I'm using right now.
#4 No age limit
Much of travel insurance has an age limit, usually around the 60-65 years. This is what happens in the World Nomads (at First Allied the limit is 75 years). At IATI Seguros There is no age limit, so I already have good travel insurance to recommend to more mature readers. And I can already recommend travel insurance to my parents.
#5 Covers part of the electronic material (at no extra cost)
By default, IATI Seguros part of the theft of electronic material, such as laptops and smartphones (although with a very low limit). Unfortunately - I would learn from experience - it only covers violence in the theft (ie, it does not cover, for example, an incident where someone steals your cell phone, camera or laptop from your backpack without giving it).
#6 Service in Portuguese
As the IATI opened a representation in Portugal, the emergency contacts are made for a telephone number in Portugal - and, in theory, always in Portuguese! It is undoubtedly an additional advantage to be able to express oneself in the mother tongue in a possible moment of distress (although my experience has not been so linear).
Travel insurance for IATI Seguros are much cheaper than World Nomads. There is no "hidden cat", as there seems to be no more cost-effective than the insurance of the competition.
It appears that the ceilings for some coverages are lower in the IATI Seguros than in the World Nomads. That is, in the World Nomads would be better covered. In any case, the probability of needing 2.000.000 € for civil liability, for example, is almost nil, so in principle the impact will be reduced.
In addition, one of the top World Nomads is the fact that they cover the franchise paid in car rental. In other words, in the event of an accident, World Nomads return the franchise paid to the rent-a-carif it exists. Such coverage does not exist in IATI Seguros.
My experience with IATI Seguros
On the second trip I took with the IATI active, the trip was to Morocco with the family. Since I already had insurance, we have taken out insurance IATI to Luisa (my wife) and my two children. Now, for an incredible and unlucky coincidence, we needed to activate the insurance soon on this trip, so I already have an experience (although not definitive in terms of evaluation).
In short, on the last day of the trip, a few hours Marraquexe, stole the phone from Luisa's wallet on a relatively busy street in the Medina. Imperceptibly someone opened the back of the backpack and carried out the robbery.
Even though we did not expect the phone to appear, we went to the police immediately before going to the airport and returning to Portugal to be able to report to the insurer.
Once at home, we activated the insurance. First by telephone to the Portuguese number (a call that was actually forwarded to Spain, passed three other hands before reaching a Brazilian employee who asked to send the documentation by email). Once we sent the requested documents - complaint to the police included - we received the indication that the theft was not covered by the policy.
In practice, I discovered that the policy only covers theft as long as it is with violence and intimidation (ie, a "robbery"), but does not cover this type of theft without violence. It was not what I expected, but I can not say that I was deceived - it is a matter of reading the conditions of the policy well. I imagine it to be a defense against travelers' abuses (there are those who try to use insurance fraudulently and companies defend themselves with more restrictive positions).
It is worth changing the World Nomads from IATI Seguros?
Honestly, I still do not know. I have read very positive reports on how the IATI Seguros responds to claims, but I do not have experience for the time being - apart from the episode reported above. There is no point in having a fantastic insurance on paper if the insurers then do everything they can to avoid their responsibilities. In any case, I am confident that this is not the position of the IATI, so I think they are recommendable.
As I said, I made insurance called IATI Bloggers and Travelers Multivation, with a duration of one year. This is the travel insurance that I will be active until December of 2019. I hope I never have to activate IATI but if that happens you will always have the positive aspect of being able to share the experience.
So if any unforeseen events happen and I have more information about how the IATI Seguros I'll be there to share. For now, I am very satisfied with the insurance conditions compared to the World Nomads; but, on the other hand, World Nomads never failed me. We need to prove the IATI on the ground, in some emergency.

A World Nomads offers one of the best and most complete travel insurance recommended by National Geographic and Lonely Planet. Other excellent and cheaper option is IATI Seguros, which has no age limit and allows multivariate insurance (including long-term travel) to any destination in the world. It's the insurance I use in my travels.
